Heirloom and partners to explore feasibility of DAC Hubs in Illinois and Florida

A map of DAC Hubs in Illinois and Florida

Last year, Heirloom and our partners were notified of selection by the Department of Energy to negotiate for funding for two earlier stage DAC Hubs in Illinois and Florida. We’re excited to share that the projects have been awarded a combined total of $5.7 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)!

Led by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, we’ll be working with technology, project development, local businesses, and storage partners to study the feasibility of both DAC Hubs.

The Illinois Basin Regional DAC Hub (DE-FE0032375) has been awarded a total of $2.9 million in federal funds to explore the feasibility of capturing 200,000 tons of CO2 per year. Heirloom and our project partners will mobilize $970,000 in private investment to support the initial phase. The ultimate goal of this effort is to design and build a regional DAC hub to capture at least 1 million tons annually.

The Florida Regional DAC Hub (DE-FE0032378) has been awarded a total of $2.8 million in federal funding to explore the CO2 removal potential in Bay County, a region with a long legacy of energy leadership. Heirloom and our project partners will mobilize $930,000 in private investment to support the initial phase. The project team aims to design a facility that captures at least 150,000 tons initially, with potential to also expand to at least 1 million tons per year.

Both of these regions leverage the geology, workforce, and infrastructure to support megaton DAC and welcome a rapidly-growing class of carbon removal careers. Heirloom’s low-cost DAC technology coupled with the expertise of our project partners can unlock this new generation of energy jobs in America and accelerate progress to our climate goals.

We’re excited to get to work with UIUC and our project partners!
