Heirloom’s first commercial facility

Last Updated: January 04, 2024

Our first commercial facility in Tracy, California, was commissioned in late 2023; it is expected, in the first quarter of 2024, to complete the full direct air capture loop - capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, storing carbon dioxide in concrete, and delivering carbon dioxide removals (CDRs) to customers. Heirloom is using the opportunity of our first commercial facility to confirm the durability of carbon dioxide once stored in concrete.

A new standard

Our CDRs are measured by metric tons of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere, not avoided emissions. We are committed to creating and operating pursuant to a robust, granular, accurate, and transparent life cycle assessment of  the total GHG emissions generated during the DAC process – from capture to transport to storage.
Heirloom has engaged an independent third-party verifier to establish a set of monitoring, reporting, and verification methods (including relevant data and calculation methods necessary for independent reproduction), standards and protocols that we hope will become the gold standard for the DAC industry. We will also use this protocol in our future projects and none of our customers are obligated to purchase CDRs from us until a quality protocol is established.

Our customers care about MRV too

Our contracts for the sale of CDRs are all forward transactions; our customers have remedies and/or exit rights before they are obligated to pay for any CDR.  There are contractual obligations to remedy either any failure to deliver a minimum number of CDRs  or any reversals that may occur; additionally, we plan on using the benefits of 26 U.S.C 45Q, which has recapture penalties for reversals.
